The Gyrofocus is a landmark in fireplace design, originally conceptualized in 1968 by French sculptor and designer Dominique Imbert. It was the first suspended, rotating fireplace, a technical innovation that redefined modern fireplace aesthetics by combining 360-degree rotation with a sculptural, free-hanging structure. Today, Focus Fireplaces, the company founded by Imbert, manufactures over 300 units per month, with prices starting at USD 15,875. The Gyrofocus remains a high-end, artisanal product, crafted through a meticulous manufacturing process that ensures both functional efficiency and aesthetic refinement.

Its production follows a precise sequence of metalworking and finishing techniques. The core shell is precision-cut from high-grade steel to ensure structural integrity and thermal resistance. Tack welding is used during assembly to secure the frame before full seam welding, maintaining dimensional accuracy. A specialized high-temperature refractory coating is applied to protect against prolonged exposure to extreme heat and prevent oxidation. Afterward, the fireplace undergoes an electrostatic painting process, providing uniform surface coverage and enhanced resistance to thermal expansion and corrosion. Finally, the unit is oven-cured at high temperatures, a critical step that hardens the coating and ensures a long-lasting finish resistant to peeling or discoloration..12

In 2023, Focus Fireplaces introduced a gas-powered variant of the Gyrofocus in response to environmental and regulatory shifts while preserving its iconic design and functionality. This new model incorporates a proprietary gas burner system that produces controlled, consistent flames without emitting particulates. The use of ceramic log technology allows it to replicate the visual warmth of a traditional wood fire while eliminating smoke and odors. Additionally, the fireplace includes a battery backup system, enabling it to function independently of the electrical grid during power outages. The transition to gas technology reflects an industry-wide move toward low-emission, high-efficiency heating solutions while maintaining the craftsmanship and engineering precision that define the Gyrofocus.
